AZN SAUCE OF LOVE

An ongoing illustrated series exploring food, heritage, diaspora and the everyday objects that connect us to home.

AZN SAUCE OF LOVE

2018 → PRESENT

An ongoing love letter to sauces, food, heritage and home.

AZN Sauce of Love began in 2018, when Shawna was approached by Facebook Analog to create a poster for the 2019 APHM.

At the time, Shawna was homesick and thinking a lot about identity, belonging and representation. After 13 years in the United States, she didn't quite identify with the label "Asian American." She was, and remains, proudly Singaporean Peranakan.

So when she was given the opportunity to create a piece about Asian Pacific American representation, she started thinking about what representation looked like through her own experience.

She thought about sauces.

She looked at the visual history of APHM posters and noticed that flora appeared often, but sauces were rarely part of the visual language.

Then she thought about her own fridge.

It was full.

Soy sauce. Chili sauce. Kecap manis. Sambal. Curry pastes. Condiments from different places and food traditions, all living together in one gloriously overstocked Singaporean fridge.

Why not sauces?

What began as sketches and research in 2018, and became a poster in 2019, grew into an ongoing illustrated series exploring food, memory, diaspora and the everyday things that connect us to home.

Since 2019, AZN Sauce of Love has grown into 30+ original works spanning illustration, art prints, ceramics, textiles, objects and collaborations.

Some pieces are still available. Others have sold out or been retired.

This archive documents the story so far.
